Grout is essential for keeping your bathroom tiles sealed so water and condensation don’t get behind them and cause any lasting damage to your walls. However, over time grout can become discoloured and grimy, which can lead to it eroding and looking patchy between the tiles. No one wants to see their grout look unsightly every time they step into the shower!

Unfortunately, that could be the least of your concerns if your grout is eroding. This could also lead to damp and mould behind the tiles, causing the cement to weaken and increasing the chance of them falling off. Today we’re going to be telling you how to regrout your bathroom tiles so you can keep them fresh, clean, and safe.

Preparing Grout Lines for Regrouting

Before you get your tools out, you’ll need to make sure your tiles are properly prepared for grouting. Don’t worry, it shouldn’t take too long – but grouting over dirt and water will cause the new grout to not stick and dry sufficiently, essentially wasting your time.

Cleaning Grout Lines

Cleaning grout lines is simple enough with an old toothbrush and some household cleaner. If you don’t have any cleaner to spare, simply mix up some bicarbonate of soda with water to create a paste that you can brush over the grout to exfoliate it. This will remove as much dirt as possible and hopefully leave the tiles looking fresher already. You might even want to stop here, as this is sufficient to spruce up the grout!

Drying Grout Lines

This step isn’t always essential as you might be digging your old grout out anyway, so there’s no point in leaving it to air dry fully. However, we’d still recommend it as using tools over wet grout might cause you to slip and accidentally scratch or damage your tiles. So, leave the freshly cleaned grout to dry for an hour or so to make sure you can work on it without butterfingers coming out.

Now we’re ready to regrout your bathroom, there are a few tools you’ll need to get started:
